An algorithmic model for invasive species: Application to Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh development in the North-Western Mediterranean Sea

چکیده
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the propagation of the green alga of tropical origin Caulerpa taxifolia (Vahl) C. Agardh in the north-western Mediterranean sea—introduced in 1984—by means of an algorithmic computer model. In order to take into account spatial interactions and anthropic dispersion or activities such as eradication and introduction of specific predators, the model is based on a coupling of a geographical information system (GIS) with a stochastic discrete event simulation. Even if the model has to cope with incomplete data and sampling difficulties encountered in the hostile environment of the sea, interesting calibration and validation procedures have been achieved, including spectral analysis of spatial simulation results. At this stage, the model seems capable of achieving a certain level of prediction: local pattern of expansion, increase of C. taxifolia biomass and covered surfaces, and invasive behaviour towards existing communities. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Seasonality of caulerpenyne content in native Caulerpa prolifera and invasive C. taxifolia and C. racemosa var. cylindracea in the western Mediterranean Sea
Fronds had higher mean caulerpenyne concentration than stolons in Caulerpa prolifera, C. taxifolia and C. racemosa. C. prolifera had higher mean caulerpenyne content w7.29"0.64% caulerpenyne/frond dry weight (DW)x than C. taxifolia (5.47"0.32% caulerpenyne/frond DW) and C. racemosa (0.43"0.07% caulerpenyne/frond DW). C. prolifera had reduced content from May to October in fronds, with no clear ...
متن کاملThe Caulerpa racemosa invasion: a critical review.
Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea is a marine Chlorophyta introduced into the Mediterranean Sea from south-western Australia. Since 1990, it has been invading the Mediterranean Sea and the Canary Islands, raising ecological problems. Although this invasion event can be considered as one of the most serious in the history of species introduced into the Mediterranean Sea, C. racemosa has not tri...
متن کاملStimulation of nitrogen fixation in refractory organic sediments by Caulerpa taxifolia (Chlorophyta)
Estimates of N2 fixation by substrata associated with the rhizophytic alga Caulerpa taxifolia were obtained using the acetylene reduction method. On average, growth of C. taxifolia enhanced rates of acetylene reduction in underlying dead sea grass sediments by a factor of 28, although the degree of enhancement was variable. The average rate of ethylene production was 3.96 nmol cm23 h21 (range 5...
متن کاملOn the identity and origin of the Mediterranean invasive Caulerpa racemosa (Caulerpales, Chlorophyta)
Recent morphological and genetic studies on the Caulerpa racemosa (Forsskål) J. Agardh complex have demonstrated that three taxa occur in the Mediterranean Sea. One of them, the ‘invasive variety’, provisionally regarded as close to C. racemosa var. occidentalis J. Agardh, is currently spreading spectacularly throughout the Mediterranean. On the basis of new morphological and molecular studies ...
متن کاملMediterranean Species of Caulerpa Are Polyploid with Smaller Genomes in the Invasive Ones
Caulerpa species are marine green algae, which often act as invasive species with rapid clonal proliferation when growing outside their native biogeographical borders. Despite many publications on the genetics and ecology of Caulerpa species, their life history and ploidy levels are still to be resolved and are the subject of large controversy. While some authors claimed that the thallus found ...
